Jewelry Care
To ensure that you can enjoy your new jewelry for a long time, it is important to care for it regularly. Here we show you how to give your jewelry the proper care it deserves.
jewelry care
Do you wear your jewelry often, whether during various activities or even while sleeping? Over time, sweat, cosmetics and other influences can leave their mark. To preserve the shine and beauty of your jewelry for as long as possible, it is important to clean it regularly.
The best way to clean your necklaces, earrings or rings depends on the material used. But one rule always applies: be as gentle as possible! Take your jewelry off when exercising or sleeping and keep it away from cleaning products and cosmetics to preserve its shine.
Why does jewelry lose its shine or tarnish? Tarnishing is a natural reaction of the material to oxygen, also known as oxidation. In silver, a dark layer forms, while in gold, the shine fades. Our silver jewelry is often rhodium-plated, which means it has a protective layer that slows down this process. Don't worry: oxidation is unavoidable, but with proper care it can be significantly slowed down and reversed by regular cleaning.
Stainless steel jewelry, on the other hand, does not tarnish, even with regular contact with water. Gold-plated stainless steel jewelry also retains its coating and shine for a long time. You can find more information about our materials in our material guide.
Tips for everyday life Your jewellery is exposed to different influences every day. To ensure that it stays beautiful for a long time, you should follow the following tips for care and storage:
Beware of chemicals:
Your jewelry should not come into contact with aggressive cleaning agents, as these can damage the material and the gold plating. It is best to take off rings, bracelets and other items when doing housework. Jewelry with gemstones should also be protected from impacts.
Avoid water:
Gold-plated jewelry will stay beautiful longer if it doesn't get wet all the time. If you still want to wear it while showering or swimming, stainless steel or non-gold-plated jewelry is a better choice.
Store safely:
It is best to store your jewelry in a closed box to protect it from moisture and oxygen.
Care instructions according to material Each jewelry material requires special care that is tailored to its properties. Here are some tips for the different materials:
Stainless steel:
Stainless steel, especially the high-quality 316L stainless steel, does not rust or tarnish. Simply polish it with a soft cloth to refresh the shine. For heavier soiling, lukewarm water with a little soap or washing-up liquid and a soft toothbrush is sufficient.
925 Sterling Silver:
Tarnished silver can be made shiny again with a silver cleaning cloth or a bath of lukewarm water, salt and aluminum foil. For more severe discoloration, silver baths from the drugstore or jeweler can help.
18K Gold:
Real gold is particularly durable and does not oxidize. Gold jewelry can withstand water without any problems, but you should protect it from contact with chlorinated water, as this can discolor the gold. Polish your jewelry occasionally with a soft cloth and use lukewarm water with mild soap if it is heavily soiled. Make sure to dry your jewelry thoroughly after cleaning.
Gold-plated jewelry:
Gold-plated pieces, whether yellow gold or rose gold, require gentle cleaning. Lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth are usually sufficient. Then dry the pieces carefully to protect the gold plating.
Gemstones:
Jewellery with gemstones should be cleaned with particular care as the material is susceptible to scratches and cracks. Use lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft toothbrush.
Regular inspection Cleaning gives you the opportunity to inspect your jewelry closely. Check stones to see if they are firmly seated in their settings and look for scratches or cracks in gemstones.
Jewelry without gemstones should be checked for its surface condition: shiny pieces lose some of their shine over time, while matte surfaces become shinier. You can easily freshen up your jewelry with a soft cloth or special matting sponges.
